WALKING IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF PAUL ROBESON

Here’s a video of our April 8, 2023, tour of the Witherspoon-Jackson neighborhood in Princeton, NJ, where Paul Robeson was born. We sponsored a bus trip to the neighborhood as part of the 125th birthday celebration. The tour was sponsored by the Paul Robeson House of Princeton.

This is a whimsical look at the walking tour from a different point of view.

West Philadelphia Cultural Alliance/Paul Robeson House & Museum Mourns the Death of Harry Belafonte, 1927-2023

The West Philadelphia Cultural Alliance (WPCA)/Paul Robeson House & Museum is extremely saddened to learn of the passing today of Harry Belafonte. In addition to being a wonderful singer and actor, he was also an activist and humanitarian who has left an indelible mark on all who came to know him.

We are grateful that Mr. Belafonte co-chaired our 125th Birthday Celebration for Paul Robeson just two weeks ago. While he was unable to physically attend the event, his daughter Gina Belafonte attended as our keynote speaker. She shared such fond memories of the close relationship between her father and Robeson, and the impact Robeson had on Mr. Belafonte’s career, as well as how they both used their public platforms for social-justice causes.

We will forever remember Mr. Belafonte as a national treasure and icon. We hope that his legacy continues to live on through his children and the many others who have followed in his footsteps.

“Our 125
th birthday celebration not only honored Paul Robeson, but we also paid tribute to Harry Belafonte,” said Janice Sykes-Ross, executive director of the WPCA. “Gina embodied the spirit of her father and Sankofa.org, the organization they formed together to fight for social justice. We are so very happy that we were able to honor him through her. Today, we embrace Gina and the Belafonte family with love and open arms in this most difficult period.”

We are excited to have an array of exciting guests to help us celebrate Paul Robeson’s 125th anniversary. The fabulous Sweet Honey in the Rock is our musical headliner. Gina Belafonte, president of Sankofa.org, a social-justice organization founded by her father Harry Belafonte, is our guest speaker.

Harry Belafonte is our Honorary Chair, and Danny Glover is our Honorary Co-Chair. They are joining us in spirit.

                            INTERVIEW WITH GINA BELAFONTE

View our ZOOM interview with Gina Belafonte (her puppy Matilda, named after one of her father’s songs, snuggled its way into her arms) that ranged from how her father Harry Belafonte is doing these days after recently celebrating his 96th birthday, the impetus behind Sankofa.org that she and her father founded, her activism that began with her parents, her mother Julie Robinson’s activism, her father’s relationship with Paul Robeson and more.

She was moved to tears when she talked about the importance of Robeson and why she was participating in his 125th birthday celebration in Philadelphia.

She also told us some things about her father that most people may not know.

You can view the video on the Paul Robeson House & Museum’s YouTube page:

                       INTERVIEW WITH FREDRIKA NEWTON

Here are snippets of what Fredrika Newton had to say during our Zoom interview:

The Black Panther Party left behind a “heavy legacy.”

Activism can take many forms, from a kind gesture to support of your neighbor.

Before joining the Party, she wasn’t sure if she was Black enough or radical enough.

Listen as Newton offers an inside look at her husband, Panther co-founder Huey P. Newton, and parallels to Paul Robeson; women in the Party, impact of the Party and a lot more. She is co-founder of the Dr. Huey P. Newton Foundation in Oakland, CA, birthplace of the Party.

We will unveil a stained-glass-door image of Paul Robeson created by Los Angeles artist Ramsess, who is an avid admirer of this great man. This is a free community event. Ramsess was one of two illustrators of the book “Paul Robeson for Beginners,” published in 2013. He has created stained-glass artworks and quilts with images of Robeson. Ramsess has donated a quilt to the Paul Robeson House & Museum.

This year, the Paul Robeson House & Museum is celebrating the 125th birthday of Paul Leroy Robeson. Each weekday during Black History Month, we will offer a series of vignettes from Robeson’s life  on Facebook and this website as a prelude to his birthday celebration from April 8-15, 2023. The series will remind the country and the world of Robeson’s contributions, and the price he paid for speaking out against racism and oppression. Robeson was born on April 9, 1898.
